Matthew 22:23-40
You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.
Don't you just love it when some arrogant, self righteous person gets put in their place? I mean really, there are mouthpieces out there that apparently have nothing better to do than to bad mouth, condemn and tell you why you are going to hell and why you are not worthy. All the while they are hiding some deep dark secret (that eventually comes out) or they are completely wrong on the face of it. Most people know this type of person is a hate monger. Sadly, others fall prey to faulty logic, their assuredness and ease with which they quote the Bible. That's why I love this trap that Jesus blasts with the line You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.
So it was in a similar fashion that Mama Tits blasted away some hecklers and haters at a Pride Parade the other day. Perhaps big and brassy, but she shut the haters down. In a non verbal way, it is funny (in a sad way) that the anti-gay Catholic Archbishop of Minnesota is under investigation for "inappropriate sexual conduct" with men. You have to chuckle a little bit, really.
I know that none of us is perfect so I am sure there are some gay screwballs out there, bad character and advocating Lord knows what. But, how can you not savour some arrogant asshat getting put in their place? Jesus did it and it needs to be done more today to the right wingnuts and the arrogant ,hypocritical religious right today.
When the Catholic church was young and facing heretics, one of the best ways they found to counter the heretic was to know the enemy and their reasoning's, using that knowledge to shut them down. Now this is a fine line here, without becoming like the Roman Catholic church and all the circular logic and hypocrisy, it would do us well to immerse ourselves in what they use as ammunition against the LGBTQ community. In this way , we can shut them down. Of course they do a fine job of shooting themselves in the foot but we can help.
What is truly sad is that Jesus' message of love and inclusion, of hope and forgiveness that is what we all need to hear, experience and live, is lost to so many because of their arrogance and hatefulness. This is the Roman Catholic church's biggest failing. The message they are delivering is not what Jesus proclaimed or lived. Jesus' message is lost in circular logic, burdensome tradition, hierarchy and hate.
To all the haters out their and the Roman Catholic church is just one of many groups of haters out there, we need to make a conscious effort to divorce their hate from the true message of Christ. We in the gay community need to shut down their rhetoric and embrace them with our love and prayers. We need to embrace God's love and the knowledge of how much we are loved and spread the good news they fail so miserably at proclaiming by their actions.
The same day some Sadducees came to him, saying there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, ‘Teacher, Moses said, “If a man dies childless, his brother shall marry the widow, and raise up children for his brother.” Now there were seven brothers among us; the first married, and died childless, leaving the widow to his brother. The second did the same, so also the third, down to the seventh. Last of all, the woman herself died. In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For all of them had married her.’
Jesus answered them, ‘You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is God not of the dead, but of the living.’ And when the crowd heard it, they were astounded at his teaching.
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’
