Romans 12:11-17
There is a scene in Sister Act (the movie) where Whoopi Goldberg wants to curse at her mobster former boyfriend. Of course now, being converted and in the presence of the sisters, she says "bless YOU" instead of some other more common curse. We are called to be much more than nice according to this passage. I find that a challenge to say the least. I am very much a work in progress. I find it a bit easier to hear and accept the other message that a passage conveys.
The examples that are noted are all about living, every aspect of living, all the highs, the lows and everything in between. It also speaks of the emotions we live with, anger, fear, sadness. What we are called to do as a human creation of God is to be, the best that we can be, to try to acheive wholeness through love and faith. As humans we are all called to enter into the human experience, not shy away from it. Invariably with human interactions there are problems and disagreements. We after all not as perfect as we'd like to think we are. On these occasions we re called to rise to a hiugher level, align ourselves with a higher authority, a higher love, the will of our creator as witnessed by Jesus Christ. No small fete to be sure.
In every aspect of life we can elevate and celebrate God by entering into our human relationships and the human condition whatever that may be. Some would call it having a zest for life I would call it a faithful person fully enaged in the busisness of the Father.
Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.
